Glacial river sand from the Orsa area, Sweden. Sand is a sediment. Age: end of the Pleistocene epoch, about 11,000 years old. These sands are very angular because they have been transported over a short distance after erosion by the land ice of the granite rocks in the subsurface. During the melting of the land ice at the end of the last ice age, rivers formed underneith the ice caps, forming so-called Esker deposits. These eskers are still visible as sand ridges in the landscape.
